Welcome Potluck for Anna King

We have hired a new Tri Cities reporter, Anna King! She comes to us from the Tri City Herald. Anna and I have a close friend in common, grew up around the same area in Washington AND are Cougs. It was a pleasant surprise to learn she would be joining NWPR and I look forward to hearing her works on the national network. She is so brilliant! Anna next to our volunteer, Norm.

It was another wonderful potluck with special microphone cupcakes courtesy of Laura and Scott. See the black licorice cables?

Welcome aboard Anna! You are surrounded by professionals who will guide your way!

Christians Say They're Sorry, Stir Up Campus

Northwest Public Radio is located on the WSU Pullman campus. When you walk into the Murrow building you have the option of picking up the New York Times, the Washington Post, Spokesman Review and the student paper, the Daily Evergreen. Out of all papers this morning, the Daily Evergreen caught my attention with their top headline: Christians Say They're Sorry, Stir Up Campus. Read Article Here

I was moved. What do you think?

I'm Back

HI! I was vacationing over in the Seattle area. A little consumer therapy, a little time with old friends and time with the family. The traffic there killed me. Whoa. 3:30pm TRAFFIC? I am spoiled here on the East side of Washington. Traffic in Pullman lasts 10 minutes and that is at 5:30pm - a time I am never out because I am here in the studio.

I visited Mt. St. Helen's and was moved by the beauty of destruction's aftermath...and of rebirth and growth.

But let's get back to the show. I am a fan of the type of radio stories we hear on NPR that allow people to be themselves. Did you hear the story of Rocky? The teen who ...well, here is what my run down said (insider look at my materials!)

ROCKY'S REDUCTION -- Three years ago, All Things Considered aired the story of teenager Rocky Tayeh. Tayeh told the story of his battle against obesity. In high school, Rocky wore size 64 pants and weighed as much as 517 pounds. A year ago,Rocky decided his only hope of losing weight was through weight loss surgery. In this udate to Rocky's story we learn how he came to make this decision and what happened to him after his surgery. Listen to the story here: Rocky's Story

What I appreciate about radio is how we can hear people's real voices. We are not distracted by imagery forced upon us, we are not lost in the picture...but focused on the voice.

My father recently lost over 100 lbs. He did it the old fashion way, diet and exercise. He realized that his weight made him feel slow and pained. It took him about a year. My Dad shared with me that he never realized that when he walked by a window he never looked at his reflection. He realized that for years he avoided his reflection...and one day when he walked by a store he caught a glimpse of himself and didn't recognize the man. I am so proud of him!

Some Entertainment For You!

A co-worker suggested I tell you about this web site. I'm still trying to figure out how to submit my feelings on it...which makes me feel frustrated. Then I feel silly to feel frustrated because I can't post my feelings on a web site.
I Feel Fine
I spent a good 15 mintues on this site...all work related! :) I did the montage and found it interesting the types of feelings expressed. Enjoy!

Quiet Now

It is 5:02pm on Thursday night. I am here in the studio, lights off in the hallways and the doors to the offices are closed and locked. Justin Reynolds is the only other person here and he is in studio 2 working on his shift. It's quiet. I only hear the gentle hum of my computer speaker and the audio from All Things Considered. It's very quiet considering that pledge drive ended last night. There were ringing phones, chattering, open doors, loud buzzing and some stress. Tonight, none of that.

I like these nights. I like to be alone with my mic and you listening on the other end. I like the relaxed atmosphere of the darkened halls and the little red lights on my Klotz board. I especially like these quiet, intimate nights when the days are long and I can leave at 7pm with the sun up. The feeling leads me into a soft evening and a sort of drifty dinner; When each bite is like the first and half the plate leaves me content.

My job is romantic at times.

Goodnight and thank you for pledging.

Gillian Coldsnow's Blog Is Better Than Mine!

OK. I can use pledge drive as a reason that I haven't posted...but I believe that excuses are the building blocks of failure. So...I will just say that Gillian Coldsnow's blog is WAY more interesting and updated than mine. Because I am and ENTJ (that personality test stuff is great!) I will learn from this and double my efforts to succeed. So, I am going to have Gillian show me how she gets all those cool pictures, pop up links and photos on the side of her blog. Copying is the flattery right?

Something Thought Provoking

My supervisor, Mary Hawkins, said something to me that made me stop in my tracks. "
"The opposite of Love isn't Hate, it is Apathy." This is particularly poignant to me in my life right now.

Hate implies you care - I mean, enough to think about a person, mull over things in your mind and let's face it...there is a sort of attraction there. Taming of the Shrew anyone? But apathy means no thoughts, nothingness, no energy...apathy to me means indifference and that means a cold heart. Apathy is true rejection friends not hate.

So think about this in your personal life. Then think about this as our pledge drive nears! $$$ I had to mention this!! Are you a lover of NWPR? Then pledge. Are you are hater of NWPR...you can still pledge and you think about us...you've at least listened! Are you apathetic about NWPR?

Personality Tests

We took personality tests at work. This is part of our plan to see how we work as a group. Great stuff. Here is where you can take the test. Take Test So what are you? Here is what we are!
Sueann Ramella = ENFJ (other ENFJs above photo)
Robin Rilette = INFP
Gillian Coldsnow = ISTJ
Nate Prudhon = INTJ
Scott Weatherly = ENTJ (which is hilarious because he is our operations manager!)

Since this is my blog, let me talk about me. ENFJ are called the Teacher Idealist or Sage. The description says:
Teachers expect the very best of those around them, and this expectation, usually expressed as enthusiastic encouragement, motivates action in others and the desire to live up to those expectations. ENFJs have a charming characteristic of taking for granted that people will meet their expectations and do what they command.
- Yup. I just don't know why people don't listen to me. I am suggesting things for their own benefit!
Another description: ENFJs have tremedous power to manipulate others with their phenomenal interpersonal skills and salesmanship. It is usually not meant to harm.
- I use my power for good.

ENFJs are blessed through introverted intuition with clarity of perception in the inner, unconcious world.
-My inner voice. She's a smart lady but I ignored her a lot recently. That was a bad idea and now I will never ignore my introverted intuition again!

Well, enough about me. What about you?
